Packing Day Tips
Arrange for childcare.
Take pets to a friend’s home or kennel them.
Be sure that you or someone assisting in your move is at home at all times.
Watch the packers very carefully to see that they understand and know exactly which items are to be packed. You can indicate this by putting different colored stickers on each item or separating items by room.
Have a marker handy to make extra notes on boxes.
To prevent packing, put everything you don’t want shipped (cash, jewelry, important documents, checkbook, prescription drugs) in a locked, labeled closet or the trunk of your car.
Double-check closets, drawers, shelves, the attic and garage to be sure you have packed everything.
If lift vans (huge crates of wood or metal used for overseas shipments) are loaded at your doorstep, watch the packing of them. Be sure everything is protected. Remember that these vans will be hoisted by cranes, loaded on ships, and treated roughly.
Carry a box of “basics” you’ll need (i.e., tools, paper products, housecleaning supplies, light bulbs, tools, emergency kit).
If you have small children, take some of the childproofing devices (outlet covers, cabinets locks, etc.) with you to use on the way and as soon as you arrive at your new home.
Have coffee, cold drinks and snacks for yourself and packers/movers. This is going to be a very long day.
Moving Day Tips
Arrange for childcare.
Take pets to a friend’s home or kennel them.
Be sure that you or someone assisting in your move is at home at all times.
Be sure your copy of the moving company’s inventory is legible.
Be certain that every container or crated item has the moving company’s inventory tag or tape on it and that each item is listed on the moving company’s inventory.
Check to see that the condition of your possessions is correctly reflected on the inventory. The exact location of existing scratches and worn or marred spots should be clearly indicated.
Read all packing documents prior to signing.
Place a copy of the packer’s inventory, stored possessions, and baggage receipts in family records. File in hand-carried luggage.
Before leaving the house, check each room and closet to make sure windows are locked, lights are out, heat or air/conditioning is adjusted, and exterior doors are locked.
Leave all the keys with your realtor or a neighbor.
